Browse through the list of your team's rooms and open any that spark your interest.

  1. Click Directory.
  2. Scroll through the list of your team's rooms, or if you're looking for a specific room, type its name in the search field.
  3. Click a room name to open it up.
  4. Check the room's topic at the top and scroll through its chat messages to see what people are talking about.
  5. Send a message in the room. (Learn how to format messages, use emoji, and more.)

Follow the same steps to open more rooms.

  • To see all the rooms you have open, look under Rooms in the chats list (that's the left menu).
  • To close a room, hover over its name and click the X.

Not seeing anything interesting? If your team is brand new, you may not have many rooms to choose from. Go ahead, and create one.

Chat with a teammate

Two minds are better than one. Chat directly with a teammate.

  1. Click + in your left sidebar.
  2. Click Chat with a teammate.
  3. Type and select their name, and get to chatting.
Chat like a pro

Make every message count. Mention teammates, format your messages, add emoji, and more.

Stride chat and messaging

Mention teammates

Bring your message to the right people's attention. Mention them in chat, and they'll get notified of your message.

  • To mention one teammate, type @ followed by the teammate’s name—like @sabrina—and your message to the teammate.
  • To get the attention of everyone who has the room open and is available (their status shows green), type @here and your message.
  • To get the attention of everyone—and we really mean everyone—who has the room open whether they're available or away, type @all and your message.

When someone is busy, we won't notify them of your message. When they come back to Stride, they'll see your message waiting for them.

Format your messages

Make your message stand out. Bold, italicize, or underline words.

  • Italics - use an asterisk or underscore, like *amazing*  or _amazing_
  • Bold - use two asterisks, like **technology**
  • Underline - use ⌘ or ctrl + u

Paste in some code and, just like that, we'll format it correctly in chat. You can enter code manually, too—just type three backticks (```) and hit Enter.

Learn more about formatting messages.

Express yourself with emoji

Who needs words when you've got emoji?!

  • To open up the emoji picker, just type a colon, or click  the smiley face, and pick the emoji that fits your mood.
  • If you've got a specific emoji in mind, type a colon and the emoji's name.
Edit your messages

Ever make a mistake? Yeah, us too. Fix them fast—or just delete them.

  1. Hover over the message, then click the three dots to the right. Or just click the up arrow to edit your most recent sent message.
  2. Choose Edit message or Delete message.
  3. Make your edits and click Save. If you chose Delete message, the message goes away. (Whew!)

Your teammates can still see that you edited or deleted the message, but not what you said.

Share files and links

Share your important business files like reports, mockups, presentations and—most important of all—gifs!

  1. Drag and drop one or more files into Stride's message input field. Or click the paperclip icon in your text input field.
  2. Type a message if you want, then hit Enter
  3. To share a link, just copy and paste it in the chat field.

See all the files shared in a chat in the Files tab in the sidebar.

Create Decisions

Lots of decisions get made—and left behind—in chat. Spontaneously capture decisions while you're chatting, so your team can know all the important things that have been decided, like which project plan you've chosen or which donuts you're ordering for the morning meeting.

Set your notifications

Never miss a message—an important one, that is. You decide when and how you want to get notified, so you can stay in touch without losing focus.

Choose when a room notifies you

Let's get real, some rooms are more important to you than others. Set your rooms' notifications so you stay informed—not overloaded.

In each room you have open, click the bell icon in the top right corner, and choose one of the notification settings:

  • All messages—notifies you every time someone sends a message in the room.
  • Mentions—notifies you when someone mentions @here, @all, or you in the room.
  • Only mentions of you—notifies you only when someone mentions you directly in the room.

These settings apply to rooms you have open. If you close the room, we'll only notify you when someone mentions you directly. (Learn about mentions.)

Room notification settings are good across all your devices, so you just have to set them in one place.

Set your in-app and mobile notifications

We can notify you while you're in the Stride web and desktop apps, as well as through mobile push notifications.

  1. Click the settings gear in the bottom of your left sidebar, then click Notifications.
  2. Choose how you want to be notified in the app (by sound, bouncing the dock icon, and so on).
  3. Choose whether you want to get mobile notifications when you're away.

We also notify you while you're in the mobile apps.

Get some focus time

Need some time to get stuff done?

To mute all your notifications, change your status to Busy. When you're done, set your status back to Available and check your unread message badges.

Or, if you're hammering away at important end-of-quarter planning or slogging through a long set of technical copy, you can really hunker down with focus mode

Focus mode allows you to pay attention to only the chats and rooms that are most important to you and mutes your notifications (like setting your status to Busy) so you're not constantly wading through distraction.

Just click the double cirle near your status at the top, add a note about what you're working on, and click Focus. Diversions be gone! Now you can focus on the task at hand.
